Top 10 Things NOT to Do on Valentine's Day
Yes Valentine's Day is technically another Hallmark Holiday, and another excuse to break the bank. However, Valentine's day is a special day to so many, and the one day of the year set aside to allow us to really show how much we love and cherish our significant other. If you are single, Valentine's Day should be the day you treat yourself and really focus on self love and confidence. When we think of Valentine's Day, we think of all the things we should do, or what we want our significant other to do for us. Dinner, chocolates, roses, candlelight dinners, the list goes on. However, for some, it is important to know what NOT to do on Valentine's Day. Some things can spoil this special day, or even put a damper on the relationship. Here's a guide of a few things to avoid at all cost on Valentine's Day to ensure a special and romantic Valentine's Day.

1. Don't have huge expectations.

Don't expect your significant other to reserve a table at the most expensive restaurant in town, fill your room with thousands of roses, adorn you with diamonds etc. This can leave you feeling disappointed and resentful, and you will forget to appreciate the thoughtfulness of the little things that were done for you. Valentine's Day isn't about how much money is spent, or how extravagant the plans are. The little things are just as special as the big things, so don't go into this day with huge expectations. If you do this, your valentine's day will turn out great.

2. Don't Fight with your lover

Nobody's perfect, and even the best of couples don't agree 100% of the time. Arguments are sure to pop up often, but on Valentine's day call a truce, let bygones be bygones and don't sweat the small stuff. This is the one day to just be in love! He might not have taken out the garbage like you asked him to do, and she might have forgot to clean her hair out of the sink and that really drives you nuts. Suck it up, take the garbage out for him, or clean the hair out of the sink and let it be. Try to avoid fighting at all costs on this day, most fights on Valentine's Day turn into huge battles, so let it be and focus on all the good things you do for each other.

3. Don't sit at home if you are single.

This is the worst thing you can do on Valentine's Day if you are single. Sure it's depressing to go out and see happy couples drooling over each other, but if you sit at home you are guaranteed to eat too much junk food, watch a sad movie, and dwell over the fact that you have nobody to celbrate with. Gather a group of all your single friends and make reservations at a romantic restaurant. I would put money on the fact that most of the couples in that restaurant will be jealous of you and your gorgeous friends laughing and having the night of your lives! If you don't have any single friends, make this day about you. Take yourself shopping, or get a massage. Just take the time to appreciate you, and remember what a great catch you are, and how many people would be lucky to celebrate this day with you.

4. Don't Compare.

So your girlfriend got 2 dozen roses on Valentine's Day, and all you got was a single stem. Your other friend got a diamond necklace, and all you got was a gift card to your favorite nail salon. Don't get jealous, you will end up taking it out on your partner and that is not fair to them. I have also learned in my life that just because someone got more elaborate gifts on Valentine's Day does not mean their relationship is better than mine. Sometimes I have learned that my girlfriends who were getting diamonds for Valentine's Day were secretly stuck in horrible relationships. You cannot judge a book by its cover, appreciate the small ways your other half shows their love whether big or small.

5. Don't Make Excuses

This is mainly for the men out there but can go for some women as well. Don't make excuses to not celebrate Valentine's Day. Yes we know it's a Hallmark Holiday, but it's more than that and there is a good chance your partner is really looking forward to getting all lovey dovey with you. Maybe you can't afford to buy a lot of snazzy gifts, or afford to eat at the nicest restaurant. So what! Be creative, but just don't make stupid excuses to avoid this holiday. It's coming no matter what, so you better start planning.

6. Don't go into debt

Yes this is a special holiday, but it is not special enough for you to go into debt for. Don't max out your credit card trying to please your significant other. If they really love you, they will remember it is the thought that counts and will love anything you get them. If you can't afford a fancy dinner, surprise them with a romantic candle lit meal at home. If you can't afford extravagant gifts, get prints of your favorite photos featuring your happiest moments together and frame them. This is a small gift that reminds you both of your love, and isn't that what Valentine's Day is about?

7. Don't be typical.

Roses and dinner at an Italian restaurant. It's been done a million times, and can make you seem a little bit thoughtless. I had an ex boyfriend who every Valentine's Day I would get roses, chocolate and a huge stuffed teddy bear. That was nice, but it seemed like he was just humoring me because he knew I liked to celebrate Valentine's Day. It was missing the special romantic element that I craved, and I'm sure you're not surprised to hear the relationship fizzled after just 2 years. Guys, please be creative! Do things differently than everyone else. Invent your own way to celebrate Valentines Day, I promise it will impress the socks off your girlfriend.

8. Don't Pretend

Don't pretend you think Valentine's Day is stupid, and don't make the mistake of telling this to your significant other. Either A) They will get their feelings hurt or B) Will believe you and on Valentine's Day they will act as if it is just another day. Don't pretend all you couples that you think Valentine's Day is stupid, we all know you secretly are hoping for roses!

9. Don't Break Up

This is just cruel. We always feel horrible for the poor souls who were dumped by an evil lover on Valentine's Day. So please, if you are thinking about calling it quits on the relationship, just whatever you do, wait till AFTER Valentine's Day. Have a soul. This is the worst day to dump someone, not only is they now devastated but also have to watch millions of happy couples celebrating their love for each other while they are single and alone. The break up can wait a day.

10. Avoid making other plans

You have 364 days in the year to meet the guys for beer, watch a football game, or anything else you might be invited to do. This day should be set aside to be spent with your significant other. If your single friends are bugging you to make plans with them, nicely turn them down. And no, it's NOT okay to have Valentine's Day plans with your partner, and then meet up with your friends to hang out after. The whole night should be spent celebrating your love for each other, you can make plans with your friends another day.

Those are the top 10 things you should avoid doing on Valentine's Day. You don't have to spend a lot of money to make Valentine's day a special occasion, just be thoughtful. Make sure you make this day about showing how much you love and appreciate each other, and how lucky you are to have a love like yours.
